How Civil Surgeons Help in the Immigration Process

29 March 2018

This post will explain what a civil surgeon does and will give you a list of civil surgeons in Cincinnati.  Before submitting an application for U.S. permanent residency through the adjustment of status process it is mandatory to include a medical exam conducted by a civil surgeon.  Additionally, the civil surgeon must be approved by the U.S. Immigration Services (USCIS).

What the Civil Surgeon Does

For the purpose of immigration to America, your normal family doctor cannot perform your medical exam, unless he or she happens to be an approved civil surgeon. Therefore, you will need to seek out a civil surgeon to perform your medical exam and to have them fill out the proper documentation.

The overall aim of the exam is to make sure you are healthy.  If you are submitting a form I-485 for adjustment status the diseases that can make you disallowed are infectious leprosy, infectious stage syphilis, gonorrhea, and tuberculosis. However, if you are looking for an immigrant visa, the type of diseases that can make you barred are certain diseases that may create a public health emergency of global concern when there’s a risk that you’ll carry that disease to the U.S., and the disease could have an effect on the health of U.S. citizens.

Additionally, a prerequisite of acquiring a U.S. green card is that you have been administered certain obligatory vaccinations. If you are immigrating to the United States on a fiancé visa, you have the option of getting these vaccines as part of the medical test you get for your fiancé visa.

The civil surgeon will make sure you meet all of the requirements and can even give you any necessary vaccinations that you may be missing.

Submitting the Medical Form

The civil surgeon will fill our Form I-693 and give it to you in a sealed envelope. You must then submit the sealed envelope with your application to USCIS. Therefore, do not open the medical form envelope. USCIS will decline the medical form, if the sealed envelope is found to be opened. The immigration lawyers at Perelmuter Law have our clients bring the sealed envelope to the office and then we make sure the envelope gets to USCIS as part of the process.
