Preparing for Your Naturalization Interview

29 May 2023

Going to your naturalization interview is the last step to becoming an American Citizen. For many, this step is intimidating, and preparing for it can be difficult. Here at Midwest Law, we have simplified studying for the test. At the beginning of the interview, the USCIS officer will ask you a few questions regarding the N-400 that you submitted. See our post on Navigating the Naturalization Process for more on submitting/preparing the N-400.

English Test

The English portion of the Naturalization test has three components: reading, writing, and speaking. During the reading portion, you will have to read one sentence from three choices. This will demonstrate your ability to read correctly in English to the USCIS officer. The reading section has a set list of vocabulary words that you can practice. At our firm, we have created a specific list of words for you to practice before going into your interview.

Similarly, in the writing portion, you will be asked to write one of three sentences. This will demonstrate your ability to write in English to the USCIS officer. Be sure to write legibly! The writing section also has a list of vocabulary words that you can practice writing. The list to practice is attached below:

The speaking section is a little different from the rest of the sections. The USCIS officer determines your speaking test by evaluating your answers to the original questions they ask at the beginning of the interview. They will also evaluate your ability to respond/carry on a conversation with them throughout the interview process.

Civics Test

The Civics portion of the test is typically daunting to applicants. However, the test can be studied for and simplified. There is a bank of 100 questions and the officer randomly chooses 10 questions. In order to pass, 6 questions must be answered correctly. See our document below which has all 100 questions and answers listed. However, be sure to regularly research who is currently elected because some of the answers may change.
